Presidents Report

1)  Thank you Anita, Linda, Mark, Michael, Pastor Bob and Terry for your continued support during 2006. In particular I need to acknowledge the dedication of Anita and Mark for their staying power and belief in our aim, ‘nude beaches for every body’. A very special person came on board this year, and I speak of Linda our current and by default Secretary Treasurer who despite her immense professional work load and study commitments still has time to be the powerhouse of support for Anita and myself. Thank you all.

2)  The year to date has been one of change and action
    a.   We have developed our mission, goals, aims and code of etiquette
    b.   Revamped our newsletters
    c.   Upgraded our beach presence and image with fantastic 6m Bali flags, merchandise and banners
    d.   Developed our new logo and upgraded the web site
    e.   We held our first FBA beach carnival on ANZAC Day at Byron Bay which was an outstanding success and the
         Aussies won again…
    f.   An offer was made by Mal of $1,000 prize money to support a event which a) raised funds b) raised FBA awareness
and c) increased membership. Later in the meeting we need to discuss this offer and how best to create a situation
to take advantage of the offer and exploit the potential to promote the FBA
    g.  The efforts of VP Anita with advertising and media releases raised beyond imagination our public profile as a viable
         family recreational choice in society

3)   In June 2006 Anita, Mark and I represented the FBA in discussions with the Premiers & Justice Depts at Parliament House in Brisbane. Cate Molloy (Noosa) was also present to help present our case.
    a.  Since this meeting Cate has been expelled from the ALP, I believe this will make our cause a lot harder to be heard.
    b.  The bottom line is the Beatty Government wants a Council to make the first move and apply to the State Government
         for a free beach.
    c.  We need to find a nudist friendly council now…

4)  NOW is the time to make a move and establish our Regional Directors and Social organizers across Australia… This being in line with the upcoming TAN article and expected membership growth. Terry your time is here, now more than ever the importance of your role as National Liaison Officer will shine as you help new Regional and social directors come of age.

5)  The FBA needs to search out and secure the volunteer help and guidance of qualified professionals across Australia to promote our growth to achieve our goal of 10,000 members by 2010. In the areas of experienced lobbyists to councils and state governments, marketing, web design, admin, fund raises, social administration and event organisation.

6)  We need to establish fund raising goals to ensure our continued, prosperity and growth.

7)  Our new membership secretary Michael is doing a mighty job in developing his area of responsibility and is to be congratulated in his efforts thank you, we welcome his contribution

8)  AGM to be held in November 2006 is a time to encourage all our FBA members to consider a position on the either the committee or in a Regional role. These positions require people with the expertise to foster the FBA’s growth to 2010 and beyond. I encourage each and every one of you to go forth seek out those who are worthy of the task at hand that is ensuring the continued growth development and maintenance of nudist beaches across Australia.

9)  Right here today we need to commit beyond reasonable doubt to ensure the survival of nudist / naturist beach culture and the success of the FBA across Australia. Our intent needs to be pure without taking comments personally or favor - for no matter what we do there will be 20 million interpretations. Thus we rely on our established aims goals and mission to guide our intent and actions.

Thank you
Philip Millroy FBA President 2006

DON’T TAKE OUR NUDE BEACHES FOR GRANTED

Here in Queensland, we never stop lobbying our Government for legal nude beaches. However in other States and Territories of Australia, naturists have become complacent. But the very existence of our legal clothes optional beaches is today threatened by greedy developers, religious wowsers (the vocal minority) and by people who engage in illegal sexual behaviour on our beaches.

Campbell’s Cove and Pt Impossible beaches in Victoria, which have been legal beaches since 1986 are threatened at present. At Campbell’s Cove developers have promised $2 Million to upgrade boatsheds, toilets, roads etc. BUT they don’t want to include naturists in their plans. They say the beach is not used much by naturists but is used instead for sexual purposes. The Wyndham City Council propose to write to the Minister for Planning requesting that he revoke Campbell Cove’s status under the Nudity (Prescribed Areas) Act 1983. Campbell’s Cove is not the best clothing optional beach. There is no sand, facilities such as toilets have been lacking and maintenance on the road has not been done in the past.  It not a desirable beach for nudist families and naturist tourists to go to. However the FBA is reluctant to lose ANY legal CO beaches, even this one. We need to make sure that they don’t take away the legal status of this beach and that improvements are for the shared use by both textiles AND nudists.

What I would suggest first of all are letters to the Mayor of Wyndham City Council, Cr. Bourke, and also to Honourable Rod Hulls MP, Minister for Planning & Recreation, Victorian State Parliament.

Then when the weather is warmer members must get to the beaches and use them. I know Sue would like to organize a clean up of litter at Campbell’s Cove beach in the warmer months and perhaps some beach days there and at the three other legal CO beaches as well. We would hope that nudists/naturists in Victoria, whether they are members of the FBA, members of Nudist clubs in Victoria or just naturist CO beach users will support Sue and go to the planned events and just use the CO beaches for non sexual nude activities.

Now Pt Impossible is under threat as well. The Surf Coast Council recently resolved to request the Minister (Rob Hulls) of the Department of Sustainability and Environment to revoke the legal status of Point Impossible Beach as per section 2 of the Nudity (Prescribed Areas) Act, 1983 and to have police monitor Southside during summer with a view to a similar request in the future if there are any reports of sexual behaviour at that beach.

This means that 3 out of the 4 legal CO beaches in Victoria are under threat of being lost.

So don’t take your legal CO and nude beaches for granted! Fight for them and fight for your naturist lifestyle. Join as many friends as you can and make the FBA strong in all areas of Australia.

IT IS UP TO YOU AS MEMBERS TO ENSURE THE FBA’s SURVIVAL

Question: My friends still don’t understand the need for one FBA Australia wide with local people organising memberships and socials. How can I explain this?

Answer: The FBA acts as an umbrella organisation as authorities need to be dealing and recognising the one organisation, this improves lobbying power which is the reason for ’10,000 members by 2010’. Authorities and members are still dealing with locals; however instead of 20-50 citizens they see thousands. This relates to votes, dollars, tourism, and consistent free beach standards across Australia. Members get consistency when visiting different areas allowing for great friendships to be established. If a local area stumbles the national body can take steps to rebuild thus the life and consistency of the FBA is extended.

Question of the month: Members keep asking about socials in their areas?

Answer:  Socials in all areas are organised by that areas social organiser basically the 3rd Sunday of the month plus more when supported. If you do not already have a social organiser then maybe you may think about (delete) taking on the role.  More socials and beach days means more members. It’s a great way to meet people and have fun… PLUS having more nudists groups on a beach discourages the undesirable element… Call Today.

RAISING THE YELLOW FLAGS- WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
By Anita Grigg (Vice President FBA)

At recent Beach Carnivals at Alexandria Bay, QLD and also at Tyagarah Beach, NSW, there have appeared some four meter high gold Bali Flags, screen-printed with the FBA logo in blue, which have given the FBA a prominent visibility at these events. Bali flags seem to say “freedom” and “beach” whilst yellow and blue are the traditional colours of the nudist movement and of the sand and the sea. Recently the FBA has purchased four Bali flags and eventually we hope to be able to give one flag to every FBA representative to take onto our beaches throughout Australia. This will tell the people at that beach that the person with the flag is representing the FBA. It will mark a place on the beach where all nudists/naturists are made welcome to come over for a chat. If you need assistance there will be a first aid kit and a phone there and someone to help. It will mark a safe place on a beach to go to. These flags can be taken to Beach Carnivals throughout Australia where the FBA will be present to provide information.

So what is the history and the significance of the yellow flags?

Nudists in the USA claim the idea of the yellow flag originated over there. Certainly the Oregon Clothing Optional Beach Alliance has a yellow flag with a red stripe for members to display on their beaches to denote membership and a safe place on the beach. But whether they were first is open to debate. Does anybody know when the first yellow flags appeared on a nude beach and where? Are yellow flags also used by nudists/naturists in other countries to denote a safe place on a beach?

Around about 1976, the Free Beach of New Zealand adopted as its mascot a bear named FRED. FRED BEAR became a readily recognizable symbol for those who preferred to go “Thread Bare” on beaches. The group introduced the idea of having individual yellow flags with the bear symbol printed on them to indicate members as well as a safe place at the beach.

In the 1990’s the FBAQ approached the FBNZ president, John Groombridge about using the Fred Bear yellow flags in Queensland, Australia and throughout the world as a universal international symbol, but permission for this was refused. So the FBAQ developed it’s own individual yellow flags for use by its members with the FBAQ symbol and runners in blue printed on it. A limited number of these original FBAQ yellow flags (40cmX30cm) still remain today and if you wish to own a piece of naturist/nudist history, they may be bought for the very inexpensive price of $5 each plus postage and handling (this is below cost price). So be quick and order a flag today so as to not miss out on this bargain!
